PI Window on Business Show 100th Episode Special

100 Episodes!  It doesn’t seem that along ago that I moved into the host’s chair here on the PI Window on Business Show on Blog Talk Radio.

The PI Window on Business

Perhaps it is not a milestone that can be measured in terms of time, but instead in the richness of the experience of being able to share the virtual airwaves with some of the most fascinating, insightful and amazing people.

As I am sure you already know, this is a passion of mine, and I consider it to be a great privilege to connect with you the audience, who so generously give of your time to join me each week.  I can only hope that you have come away from our time together enriched in some small way, and that through the first 99 shows you have enjoyed the experience as much as I.

There has of course been a great deal we have experienced, and interviews too numerous to count that we have enjoyed.

From leading political figures such as Canada’s Trade Minister Stockwell Day, and social media gurus and Godfathers such as David Cushman and Shel Israel.

We have had on the show new media journalists like The Young Turks’ Cenk Uygur and branding experts such as Libby Gill, Marsha Friedman and the incomparable Marketing Doctor himself Dr. John Tantillo.

We’ve talked about leadership with Dr. John Ullmen, Bill McAneny and Dr. Gaby Cora, as well as examined the world of social networking with both Penny and Thomas Power.

We have even welcomed both local as well as international musical talent such as John Wright and award winning blues band Ryan Hartt and The Blue Hearts.

It has been a fun, action-packed ride.  So much so that naming everyone who has been a part of each and every broadcast would require more space and even more time than a 90-Minute Special could afford.

That said I have taken the liberty of assembling some of the most memorable highlights from the past 99 episodes to share with you today.  So sit back, enjoy, and thank you for giving me the opportunity to do something I really love.

Program Audio Excerpts:

BTR Special 1: It all started on March 26th, 2009 when the PI Window on Business Show premiered on the Blog Talk Radio Network.  Here is the opening comments from our very first broadcast. (1:48)

BTR Special 2: But how did Blog Talk Radio come into existence, and what is the future for this exciting new medium.  My November 17th, 2009 interview with BTR founder and CEO Alan Levy will shed a little bit of light on how a company with a telecom background is making an indelible and enduring impression on the social media landscape. (3:40)

Alan Levy, Founder Blog Talk Radio

BTR Special 3: Now the show has touched on a number of interesting topics that has steadily expanding since the first broadcast.  One such area is the intersecting interests (and perhaps conflicts) of the political and business worlds as illustrated in this September 30th, 2009 interview with Canada’s Trade Minister Stockwell Day regarding the impact of the Buy American Policy on both domestic and global economies. (5:40)

The Honourable Stockwell Day

BTR Special 4: Of course government policy, or the absence thereof, does indeed have an impact on all areas of the business world including entrepreneurial spirit.  In my November 20th, 2009 interview with leading high tech VC Brad Feld, we discussed the impact that current US Immigration policy has on foreign graduates from top US institutions in terms of their ability to stay and build both businesses and jobs in this country. (5:18)

Brad Feld

BTR Special 5: Of course, let’s not forget about the emerging social media world and the many great interviews we have had with industry thought leaders such as the Godfather of Social Media Shel Israel who joined me on two occasions to talk about his new book “Welcome to Twitterville: How Businesses Can Thrive in the New Global Neighborhoods.”

Have a listen to an excerpt from our September 10th discussion on the practical monetization of Twitter. (4:20)

Shel Israel, Author & Social Media Guru

BTR Special 6 (A & B): My interviews with Shel represented the perfect evolution of earlier segments on social media, including these two excerpts from the June 4th, 2009 Guest Panel discussion surrounding “The Psychology of Social Networking.”

In this segment I was fortunate to have author and Ecademy network founder Penny Power join us from the UK, as well as the bestselling author of 27 books on social networks Patrice-Anne Rutledge from the US, and Canadian-based social media marketing guru Andrew Ballenthin to provide an international perspective on the motivation that drives the social networking world. (1:30 & 5:53)

Penny Power, Founder Ecademy

BTR Special 7: Now perhaps surprisingly to some, rather than compressing through acquisitions or mergers, the social networking landscape continue to expand and become even more fragmented with the launch of an ever increasing number of new social network sites including So Act and Perfect Networker.

On October 13th, 2009 I welcomed Perfect Networker founder Mac Cassity to the show, to talk about his Herb Kelleher/SouthWest Airlines-spirited community. (2:52)

Mac Cassity "The Perfect Networker"

BTR Special 8: On November 18th, 2009 I also had the chance to talk with So Act’s visionary founder Greg Halpern about his socially conscientious community to which I had referred to as the 60-Minutes of social networks.  So Act happens to also be the subject of my just released second book titled “What Are You Waiting For? So Act Already! (The Unsociable Business of Social Networking And Why The So Act Network Will Change The World). (3:54)

Greg Halpern

BTR Special 9: There were, as I am sure you can imagine many unplanned humorous moments, that added to the richness of the BTR experience.

One that immediately comes to mind is the July 14th segment “Death Before The Eulogy And Other Myths of Public Speaking with New York Times bestselling author Dr. Larina Kase and comedienne Sally Edwards.

Just after we went live, I went off the air leaving both Larina and Sally to navigate the virtual airwaves without a host. (1:12)

Dr. Larina Kase

BTR Special 10: Of course, experiences such as these were not limited to just the start of the show.

In my September 8th, 2009 interview with Dr. John Ullmen I found myself unceremoniously kicked-off the air on my own show due to a glitch with the main BTR switchboard in New York.  The end result is that John was left with a Verizon-type “can you hear me now” scenario where upon the conclusion of his answer to my question he discovered that I had mysteriously disappeared.

Being denied access to the show via the host call-in number, I was fortunately able to join the broadcast dialing-in as a guest. (1:55)

Dr. John Ullmen, Ph.D.

BTR Special 11: Aside from the technical glitches (which are a part of any medium going back to the days of traditional radio), there have been countless moments of unplanned frivolity including the time that I spilt an entire glass of cola on my desk, keyboard and myself.  Good thing we were not on television!

However, sometimes the stories themselves provided their own form of comic relief as The Marketing Doctor himself, Dr. John Tantillo related a story about a very successful advertising campaign for a terrible tasting beer.  By the way, be sure to check out John’s new book “People Buy Brands Not Companies.” (3:21)

Dr. John Tantillo

BTR Special 12: As alluded to earlier when I talked about The Psychology of Social Networking episode, the PI Window on Business has been fortunate to have internationally diverse, thought leaders on guest panels discussing some of the most through-provoking, and yes even controversial topics of the day.

In this extended excerpt from a segment titled “How Will Journalism Survive the Internet Age, I was joined by Cenk Uygur (pronounced Jenk You-ger), whose Internet TV show The Young Turks garners more than 13 million YouTube hits per month, social media expert David Cushman, Lulu Publishing’s Sherrie Wilkolaski and the “angriest generation’s” Dr. Ellen Brandt, as each weigh in on their own view of the evolving medium of social media. (10:00)

Cenk Uygur The Young Turks

BTR Special 13: While social media is a big part of today’s global community, there were of course more traditional areas upon which our panel discussions focused.

On June 30th, 2009 in which a lightning strike turned a single episode into a 2-Part mini-series, I welcomed a truly international panel of experts to discuss 21st Century Leadership.

Joining me from the UK was author Bill McAneny whose book “Frankenstein’s Manager: Leadership’s Missing Links” has been a long-time personal favourite, US-based author and TV personality Dr. Gaby Cora and Six Sigma IEE author and expert Forrest Breyfogle III, as well as bestselling author Merydith Willoughby from the land down under (Australia for those unfamiliar with Men At Work), who at the time had just released her newest book “Sex in the Boardroom.”

It was to say the least an “enlightening” discussion. (8:58)

Dr. Gaby Cora

BTR Special 14 (A & B): As many of you already know, I released my first book “Your Show Will Go Live in 5 Seconds (Confessions of a Blog Talk Radio Host)” in early November, as a means of sharing my experiences in terms of creating a show on BTR.

Based on the response to the book, and the desire to introduce the exciting BTR platform to future hosts, I began moving behind the scenes as a producer on the PI Window on Business Show, and yielding my seat to some pretty amazing guest hosts.

In the first guest host broadcast, my friend and Black Belt Mindset sensei Jim Bouchard got the new format off to an incredible start with  his segment titled “The Lords of Discipline.”

Here are two excerpts from his interviews with both Mark Altman and No Compromise Leadership’s Neil Ducoff  (6:34 & 1:34)

Sensei Jim Bouchard

BTR Special 15: Jim assumed the hosting mantle a second time when he welcomed 5 time New York times bestselling author Larry Winget to talk about his latest book “Your Kids Are Your Own Fault.”  (4:10)

Larry Winget

BTR Special 16: Former guest turned guest host Neil Ducoff also took a turn behind the PI Window on Business mike when he welcomed authors and business experts Jack Stack, whose book “The Great Game of Business” was rated as one of the Top 100 business books of all time, and John DiJulius (What’s the Secret To Providing a World-Class Customer Experience), to discuss survival in the new business paradigm. (5:22)

Neil Ducoff, No Compromise Leadership

Closing Comments:

As indicated at the top of the show, it is an almost impossible task to select highlights from what has been a “highlight filled” 99, now 100 shows.

Each and every guest brought so many things to the virtual airwaves of Blog Talk Radio that it made the task of choosing the excerpts you have enjoyed with me today a daunting, if not impossible task.

So before I close this, our 100th episode on a high note with a musical excerpt from our evening Pig & Whistle segment featuring the music of the internationally acclaimed Ryan Hartt and The Blue Hearts I would like to remind you that we will be releasing a commemorative CD of today’s broadcast later this month.  Look for details on how you can obtain your copy through our various social network sites as well as the PI Window on Business Blog.

Finally, I would like to thank you our listening audience for making it all worthwhile by sharing what is one of your most important assets . . . your time.

THANK YOU, and I look forward to sharing the next 100 episodes and beyond with you here on the PI Window on Business on Blog Talk Radio.

Now we will close today’s show with a Ryan Hartt and The Blue Hearts’ song titled “Rock All Night” (2:11).
