November 17th Segment (How McDonald’s Real Estate Decisions Impacts Success on Blog Talk Radio)

CEO Alan Levy founded Blog Talk Radio (www.BlogTalkRadio.com) in August 2006.

The concept for Blog Talk Radio was developed by Levy as he mourned his father’s passing. Levy maintained a blog, www.theinspirationalvisit.blogspot.com to update his family and friends on his father’s health – and later as a memorial to his life.

Levy thought by combining blogging, social media and telecommunications, a true immediate two-way interactive online platform could be established. This led to the birth of Blog Talk Radio and a new broadcast medium.

Since it’s inception, Blog Talk Radio has hosted close to 400,000 broadcasts, which are all archived, indexed and syndicated online.

In addition to Blog Talk Radio, Levy is a principal shareholder of XChange Telecommunications, a local telephone provider and myphonecompany.com, a VOIP company, both of which were founded in 2002. XChange powers Blog Talk Radio’s telephone needs.

From December 1999 to March 2000, Levy served as Chief Operating Officer at Viatel Inc. (NASDAQ – VYTL), a facility based global telecommunications company. In December 1999, Viatel Inc acquired Destia Communications in an all stock transaction valued at $1.2 billion.

Prior to Viatel Inc, Levy served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Destia Communications (NASDAQ – DEST) from July 1996 to December 1999. The company sold an array communications services including voice, data, and ISP services with sales operations in eleven countries including the US, UK and most of Western Europe.

When Levy joined Destia in August 1996, the company had 40 employees in two countries, 10,000 customers and revenue of $2 million per month. Under Levy’s leadership, Destia grew to 1200 employees, 550,000 customers and annual run rate revenue of $400 million.

From October 1993 to July 1996, Levy held positions including Managing Director Europe, Executive VP of Legal and Finance, and Chief Financial Officer at Viatel. He joined the company after George Soros purchased a 20% minority stake in the company. During his tenure, the company raised more than $100 million to deploy a pan European fiber network and establish sales and marketing organizations throughout Western Europe.

November 20th Segment (Diminishing Prospects: How U.S. Policy is Undermining Entrepreneurial Vision)

Brad has been an early stage investor and entrepreneur for over twenty years. Prior to co-founding Foundry Group, he co-founded Mobius Venture Capital and, prior to that, founded Intensity Ventures, a company that helped launch and operate software companies and later became a venture affiliate of the predecessor to Mobius Venture Capital.

Brad currently serves on the board of directors of Gist, Gnip, Oblong, Standing Cloud, and Zynga for Foundry Group. Previously, Brad served as chief technology officer of AmeriData Technologies. AmeriData acquired Feld Technologies, a firm he founded in 1987 that specialized in custom software applications. Brad had grown Feld Technologies into one of Boston’s leading software consulting firms prior to the acquisition. He also directed the diversification into software consulting at AmeriData, a $1.5 billion publicly-traded company which was acquired by GE Capital in 1995.

In addition to his investing efforts, Brad has been active with several non-profit organizations and currently is chairman of the National Center for Women & Information Technology and co-chairman of the Colorado Governor’s Innovation Council. Brad is a nationally recognized speaker on the topics of venture capital investing and entrepreneurship and writes widely read and well respected blogs at www.feld.com and www.askthevc.com.

A Reluctant Prospector is someone who owns a small business and loves what he (or she) does… but hates the idea of self-promotion. He’d be happy as a clam if he could just DO what he DOES all day long and not have to worry about where his next client or customer is coming from. He realizes that there is a certain amount of marketing he’ll have to do, but he sees it as a necessary evil, not something he enjoys. He’s NOT a salesperson in search of a product or service to sell – he has a product or service and wishes it would sell itself.

Sound familiar?

When sales guru Jennifer Allan, author of critically acclaimed books including “Sell With Soul” and “If You’re Not Having Fun Selling Real Estate, You’re Not Doing it Right” was a guest on the PI Window on Business Show this past December, it was clear from the start where the Soul of her book and beliefs originated. February 18th Segment (Larry O’Donnell, III: Undercover Boss)

Of the diverse, interesting and yes even thought-provoking topics we have covered on the PI Window on Business show leadership, and in particular 21st century leadership, is an area upon which we have focused a great deal of our time and energy. So when I first saw the commercial for Undercover Boss, I can say without any hesitation that I was hooked before the 30 second spot was over.

For me it was the realization of an evolutionary leadership cycle which began with the unapproachable reverence surrounding the Henry Ford’s and the E.I. du Pont’s to the modern day celebrity accessibility of a Lee Iacocca and a Donald Trump to the now real-world vulnerability of . . . an Undercover Boss. Vulnerability, humility and even a healthy dose of courage were words that came to mind along with a feeling that I could only equate with standing over a precipice of the unfamiliar and unknown. In short, it is one thing to walk the talk – it is an entirely different scenario to live the talk, especially on the front lines of a multi-billion dollar corporation.

But live it Lawrence O’Donnell, III President and Chief Operating Officer of Waste Management did . . . in front of close to 39 million viewers following this past Sunday’s Super Bowl.

In a recent interview Mr. O’Donnell, although I would imagine that he would not be offended if I referred to him by the now familiar Larry, used terms such as “not in my wildest imagination,” I am definitely not a reality-type person” and “when Lynn Brown brought this to me I told her she was crazy,” to describe his first reaction to the suggestion that he become an Undercover Boss. Despite the obvious reservations, Larry O’Donnell did however become the first Undercover Boss on CBS’ smash hit series.

I am also pleased to say that Larry O’Donnell will be my guest on today’s PI Window on Business Show.
