Acres of Diamonds: Are our children the underprivileged of the world?

In December of 2009 I wrote an article titled Anti-psychotic Prescriptions . . . for Children: Is the Medicaid Story Today’s Version of Go Ask Alice?, in which I discussed the the growing number of children between the ages of 3 and 17 who were (and still are) being prescribed powerful anti-psychotic drugs.

Given the above trend, it was of course not a surprise to discover that anti-psychotic prescriptions “are the single biggest drug expenditure for Medicaid, costing the program $7.9 billion in 2006, the most recent year for which the data was available.”

For many parents, such as the mother of a 10 year old who has been on anti-psychotics since the age of 3 and now suffers from weight and heart problems as a result of taking the drugs, these side effects are a reasonable trade-off because in her own words, they made “the boy’s mental and physical conditions manageable.”

Mental and physical conditions manageable?  If I am not mistaken, do we not live in the greatest country in the world where our children can grow up fed, educated and loved?

According to 5 time bestselling author Larry Winget, whose latest book Your Kids Are Your Own Fault references studies which indicate that on average parents only spend 3 minutes per week in meaningful conversation with their children, it is this very abundance or pursuit thereof that may be at the heart of the problems associated with bullying, and the purported need for children to be drugged.

Against this backdrop of impoverished parent – child relations, Lisa Haisha’s sharing of her encounters with children from around the world, and particularly those in trouble spots such as Iraq, through her book Whispers From Children’s Hearts is a gut wrenching wake-up call that should put North American society on notice as to how much we have let our own children down within the supposedly cozy confines of what is undoubtedly a gilded cage of opportunity promised, yet lost.

Lisa Haisha will be my guest on Friday, February 25th at 8:00 PM EST in what promises to be a very memorable PI Window on Business segment.  Remember to use the following link to tune in to both the live and on-demand broadcast of “Acres of Diamonds: Are our children the underprivileged of the world?

Lisa’s Book:

To memorialize the whispers from each child’s heart, in 2005 Lisa, along with illustrator Tim Huhn, published Whispers from Children’s Hearts.   The book’s launch was a quiet one; Lisa’s goal was merely to preserve the voices and truths of the children she had counseled who had made such an impression on her.  To honor the parents’ requests, and out of respect for their privacy and safety, Lisa did not use the children’s last names or photos in the book, and only photos of children that gave her permission appear on this site.  Individual identities are not important in any case; the children in the book represent children everywhere.

“I simply give you their hearts,” writes Lisa, “for they were the heart of my journeys around the globe. Enjoy and learn from their surprising thoughts, and share them with the little people in your life.”

The Whispers Foundation is Born

Despite the book’s quiet release, copies soon began circulating among Lisa’s friends, Hollywood clients, and educators.  That’s when Lisa began receiving unsolicited and enthusiastic endorsements from actors, national speakers, and bestselling authors:

    • “An amazing insight to the world we live in.” — Robert Allen, Author & Motivational Speaker

    • “Read this book and hear your heart whisper.” — Mark Victor Hansen, co-author of the bestselling Chicken Soup for the Soul series

    • “[This book] touches the inner ear of those willing to listen…These are whispers that long to have a voice.” — Ben Vereen, Entertainer & Motivational Speaker
