Sociology and Business Intelligence

Sociology is the study of human societies. In the upcoming PI Window on Business segment titled “Sociology and Business Intelligence,” I welcome Viador’s Vice President of Services Thomas Abbott.

Like so many subjects that catch my interest, and perhaps due to playing too many football games without a helmet, I tend to see things (or at least try to) through a unique lens.

While terminology such as Bi-Portal collaborative platforms, and Business Intelligence tools that are 100% Java, J2EE, and web-based are usually the focus of most articles and discussions in these areas, what jumped off the page at me was the fact that Abbott holds a BA in Sociology from Hobart College, and an MA in Sociology from San Francisco State University.

Similar to a bloodhound that has caught the scent of the target of his pursuit, the fact that someone with Sociology degrees is today the Vice President of Services for a technology company was an uncharted trail I just had to pursue. Especially since the technology company in question provides a solution which is geared towards tearing down functional silos, and in the process bridging the organizational divides of compartmentalized intelligence within the global enterprise.

Perhaps emerging SaaS applications are intuitively parallel to the human elements that are tied to sociological understanding and realities? In other words, do they reflect and/or adapt to the way in which we actually interact as people?

All I can tell you is that this segment of the PI Window on Business may very well prove to be one of our most interesting, insightful and yes, even entertaining segments. Remember to tune in between 12:30 and 1:15 PM EDT on the 22nd.
